Why did my family stop using commercial soap and shower gel?
I have dry skin and my daughter has eczema. I wanted to find out if the ingredients in our commercial shower gels were irritating and drying our skin out further.
Most commercial washes use a petrochemical base. Petrochemicals are heavily refined, cheap and have a long shelf life. The refining process produces toxic chemicals known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are bad for our health and thought to contribute to or even cause cancer.
The majority of commercial shower gels and soaps also contain sodium lauryl sulfate. The BBC recently aired a documentary "Trust me I am a Doctor" from Bath University where they had been studying the impact of sodium lauryl sulfate on our skin. Sodium lauryl sulfate was shown to heavily deplete the skin barrier function by breaking down the natural lipids leaving the skin dry and itchy thus making eczema and dry skin worse.
How is natural soap different to commercial shower gel?
Shower gels are 98% artificially colored water with chemical perfumes, preservatives and drying sodium lauryl sulfate.... oh and they come with a plastic bottle.
Soakk soaps are handcrafted from 100% plant oils which have many natural antioxidants and vitamins. All of our soaps are coloured naturally with clay , herbs, cocoa or fruit juices. To add a gentle natural aroma we only use natural plant based essential oils.
The plant oils and butters when mixed produce natural plant glycerine meaning our bars are hydrating, full of antioxidants, non-drying and good for your skin as well as the environment.
